Let's Talk Chalk - Beware!

 Let's talk chalk!








I recently did a post on a Free curb side find HERE. A huge framed art. The frame was beautiful; the art, not so much! Anyway, I transformed it into this trendy chalkboard...

Using the above pictured Bistro Chalk Markers, I did a simple drawing for Thanksgiving. After that was over, I used a damp rag to wipe away the chalk. I was intending to do a different design for Christmas, Only to find that the chalk was permanent!! 

THIS is what it looked like after wiping it off...

I had been using this same chalk marker on a manufactured chalk board that I have on my pantry door...without any trouble removing what was written.

 I tried the Bistro Chalk Marker on a silver tray that I had painted with chalkboard paint and it became permanent too.

My discovery is that these markers work only on manufactured chalkboards and not on any of my homemade painted ones!
Do you think that the manufactured chalkboards have a coating that protects them for these chalk markers becoming permanent?
Not wanting to go into panic mode and not having the time to fix the situation, I just used regular chalk and made the shape of Christmas trees on each side of the chalkboard.

Under the trees are still the pumpkin and the saying.  After Christmas I decided that instead of a huge chalkboard, and fix it by repainting the chalkboard with paint again, I would make it into some other kind of artwork appropriate for the space.

First, I took the board out of the frame and using old Quincy advertising pages from an old book, I decoupaged them to the surface. I toned them down with a mixture of glaze and gray paint. Why? because, 1) I am going to paint my kitchen gray and 2) I knew that what I was going to put on top of this needed the background to be more subtle.

 Here is the final project. Using a vinyl kit, I applied this on top.

Now, to get the kitchen/dining room transformed! Eight years of these red walls...let's just say, "It's time to go".  I can't wait...
