French China Hutch!

Be

Prepared

To

Drool!

I was not looking for a china cabinet, even though I have my Great Grandmother's china.

But, it seems when one has something on their mind, these things tend to find a solution.

I happened at a garage sale last fall and came upon this...
I adore French looking furniture. There were several things going for this piece;
 1) It's French style,
 2) It's Drexel Furniture (Excellent Quality),
3)Price, $40

Here is what was wrong with this piece...It's HEAVY since it's all one piece! Ouch

I bought it anyway and figured that I would figure out the logistics later. LOL
It got too cold to paint this piece in our unheated hobby garage, so I contemplated it all winter. As soon as it got warm enough, I was out there working on it. I had decided on a light gray with white accents. I think I had a right call on that decision based on how beautiful this turned out.
After finishing it, I called in the troops, two of my strongest men to carry it from our hobby garage to into our study. That cost me another $40.
I painted the shelves white and the back that I had removed, I wall papered in Anagalyptia wall paper that looks like old tin ceiling and then it gets painted. I wanted to add texture and interest when you looked inside.
Initially, I had some of the key pieces of my Great Grandmother's china in this bookcase in my master bedroom. It looked good and worked fine until I came across this old window that I had to have.
Out went the bookcase (I sold it) and in came the huge arched window. But I digress.
So now you see where the 'solution' came in when I found this piece to hold my heirloom china.
This is a picture of the china and my Great Grandma with her five children just after her husband passed away at too young of an age. She never remarried. My Grandma is the oldest girl to the right.
(Above,  you can see the Anagalyptia paper backing I used)
The lower shelf has a picture of a ship that carried my Great Grandma when she was a little girl, along with her family from Germany to Ellis Island before they settled on a Kansas farm.
On my next post, I will show you around this room and tell you more about these awesome columns.

I am sure that I will have fun moving pieces around and adding some silver to this fabulous piece!

    1. I first made my own chalk paint, then as I was brush painting the piece gray, I also ran the brush over the mesh. You have to be careful that this will cause splashes on the area around your piece. Use a dry brush, meaning after dipping the brush in the paint, use a paper towel and take some of the paint off the brush before you brush the mesh. You can redip back on the paper towel and pick up more paint and keep doing this, inside and out of the mesh.
