The Cutest Wool Trees

One of the favorite things
that I do every year
to get myself in the
Spirit of Christmas
is go to an Open House at a local natural crafts store called
Ohio Street Originals.

This post is not about this store (but you can see an old post I did on that store HERE)

What this post is about are the fun and adorable little wool trees that I discovered there and how to make them!

I purchased the green tree and used it to figure out how easily these are to make.

I want to mention that I didn't buy anything to make these. If you are a true crafter like me, you have bits and pieces on hand to whip up things like this.

First, I took old wool sweaters that I had on hand for this kind of project. I cut triangles out the sleeves of the sweaters. I previously purchased these sweaters at our local thrift store.

I then gathered some old wooden spools and inserted wood dowels and cut them to the height for each triangle. Then I simply sewed the triangles leaving the bottom open. Turn right side out, stuff with cotton batting. Insert dowel and hand-sew closed.

Using some wooden stars that I painted green with acrylic paint, I glued them to the bottom of the spools to give more surface for the trees to stand. I also wrapped the spools with various cord or embroidery floss that I had on hand.
I looked at each tree and decided to embellish them with what struck me. The largest gray tree was jazzed up by using red embroidery floss and small snowman heads that I had in my stash. Metal stars were glued to the top, front and back.
The pinkish red tree was embellished with tiny brass bells. The maroon tree was cut from a sweater that already had embroidery on it so I didn't need to embellish it. For whatever reason, I wanted to leave the white tree simple. I just added a bell (the last one I had) to the base of the spool. I also glued painted gold wooden stars to the top.
As I desire to down-size my Christmas decor, I just can't help myself when I see something that I think is cute and would be fun to make.
At this rate, I take two steps forward by giving away some of my Christmas decor and then one step back by making more!
