A New Dresser and A Special Girl!

I have been away from my computer for a bit. Have you missed me?

I am the proud new Grandma of a beautiful baby girl, my daughter's first precious gift from God.

Oh do I ever have a birth story for you! I will not get into the heavy details, but let's just say, we really were exhaustively overjoyed to have Isla (Eye-La) Rose come into this world after 40 hours of labor!

Hubby and I got a call at 4am on Friday morning from our daughter that her water broke.

We had to drive about 2 hours to the town that our daughter lives, Springfield, IL. We arrived around the time Lisa's contractions began.

The birth plan Lisa decided on was called Hypnobirthing with a Midwife at Memorial Hospital. The Midwife advised Lisa to labor as long as possible at home,

So she stayed home till 6pm when she decided that she wanted to go to the hospital. Pains were still 7 minutes apart.

Chris was amazing with Lisa. He was raised with his Mom as a Midwife so somehow the gentle nature of coaching Lisa along the way seemed just second nature, though since this was his first baby too, he was as scared as she. He took her for a walk to try to speed up the contractions.
At the hospital, he was there to help her in any way she wanted. For her, the most productive contractions were standing up.
She was doing a great job breathing and staying relaxed. But after almost 12 hours of labor, she was still just at 3cm. The doctor decided it was time for intervention of Pitocin. That did intensify the contractions and she made it to 5cm.

After 24 hours of labor and no pain meds, Lisa decided that she would agree to an epidural. She made it longer than I would have and had done an amazing job at trying to go natural but her body was just not doing what needed to be done.
Lisa holding her baby for the first time...3 1/2 hours after surgery!
Finally, after about 40 hours of labor, the decision to do a C-Section was made. Lisa never got past 7cm and four minutes apart on contractions. Baby's head would not come down and baby was thought to be larger than her narrow hips would allow. But the biggest issue was her water had broken 40 hours prior and Lisa spiked a fever which meant that she had infection so baby probably did too.
Sweet Isla (Eye-La) Rose was born at 8lbs on Saturday, April 12, 2015! She looks just like her Daddy...and he is so in awe with her. Lisa and Isla both had to do two days of IV antibiotics for the infection, but otherwise healthy. They went home today and are bonding with their new little family.

If you noticed, you can unscramble Isla's name and it will spell Lisa! Rose is my middle name. I just can't believe that I have a Granddaughter to spoil. It will be so much fun.

Also if you recall, I have been making all kinds of things for Isla's arrival like baby shower decor Here and Here, to her crib bedding Here.
Before
Along the way during the pregnancy, Lisa found an antique dresser. It was the right height to use as a changing table and cute in design. The price was right at $20 too. It had a very warped drawer, so Hubby made an open shelf in place of the drawer.

I had made bedding (you can see that HERE) out of material that my daughter fell in love with in a tealy-green color and Lisa wanted the dresser this color. I happened to find a can of miss-tint paint in the very color I needed at Walmart!

Here it is being used in their tiny home. It works perfect for the space they have. I told Lisa that many young adults just starting out, make due with a house they rent and she will look back on this as a fond adventure.
Eventually, the baby furniture will move upstairs and Isla will get her own room but for this first time Mom, she doesn't want her baby that far away.

Though, the birthing plan did not go as planned, we are blessed beyond our dreams.

Update: Here is 6 day old Isla Rose...

  3. She is just beautiful! Congratulations! Good for you in encouraging your daughter to enjoy her little rental. I wish I'd had a better attitude when I was in rentals, back then I was always thinking life couldn't really be enjoyed until we had everything "together", haha. I finally realized we are people who will never have it all together, even having owned our home for 12 years now, heehee. And, life is wonderful; God's blessings are to be enjoyed anywhere, anytime, even (especially?) in tiny rentals!

  4. Congratulations! So glad mother and baby got through everything alright. I have four grandchildren and they are so much fun and a real blessing. Enjoy little Isla. I think grandchildren grow up twice as fast as children do so have fun. BTW the dresser is really pretty too.

  9. Yes indeed, I did miss you ! What a wonderful reason to be missing from action, though <3 Guess what, your daughter's labor and delivery went almost exactly like mine did, except mine was 32 years ago, and my husband and I were blessed with a son, Taylor David. I love the name Isla Rose - so beautiful ! May God bless you all and as a grandmother of two precious ones, a girl and a boy, there is nothing in the whole world as wonderful as being a "nana". Hugs, Dorinda

  14. Oh so happy for you!!! Isla is so beautiful! Thank God they are ok after the infections. That is a scary thing to go through. Her labor sounds a little like mine....baby's big head and hips that won't budge! LOL
C-sections are not fun....I had 2. But she will be ok and back to getting around REALLY soon....new mother's seem to bounce back pretty fast. :-) Congrats Grandma!!!!! :-) :-)

  19. Also I had no epidural. Was a relief to be knocked out for my C Section. After 38 hours only progressed to 5 cm. Your daughters birth story sounds like mine. Except with no epidural. My son was 8 pounds and 8 ounces . I am only 5. Ft 1 inch. Baby too big for my pelvic area. Thank goodness my now 42 year old son was born healthy. What a beautiful grandbaby you have.
