Why I Call My Guest Bedroom The MC Room!

I love MacKenzie-Childs style and if you never heard of them or haven't visited their store or website, you are really missing out in my book.

The style is so fun and whimsical. I am especially attracted to their Courtly Check.

But I am not willing to pay their high prices! I find that it takes the joy out of owning something if it's just way over priced for me.

So I take my talents in sewing and painting and make my own versions of what inspires me about MacKenzie-Childs.

Here is a sampling of what I have done...

When I saw the MC chair, I fell head over heels and decided to try to replicate this design. I shed many tears over upholstering this chair because it was the first full upholstering job I had ever tried and though it came out fabulous, it's not for the faint of heart.
Here is the chair in its before and after...

Sewing comes easy, thanks to my Mother forcing us girls to learn how to sew ALL our own clothes by the age of 8! Yes, you heard me right, but she meant what she said when she announced that we could go naked if we don't learn to sew! I only alter purchased clothes now but I sew all kinds of decor items with glee.

Since I love black and white check, I usually have that style of fabric on hand. So I whipped up these pillows for the room.
What grabbed me about this MC table, was the 'hidden' checks on the inside of the legs. That is not the usual way for MC to display their whimsy. They are more up-front and would have normally put the checks on the outside of the legs. However, I loved the subtle idea of it and replicated it on my side table/fern stand.
Here is the table/fern stand in its before and after...
At first I thought this sky/landscape in the round was weird. But then just starring, it grabbed me. I have done a couple of these, but this little table is one that I had not sold. I also painted the frame from a raw ceramic piece.
Here is the table in its before and after...
And another one that I did and sold...
I used to be a tassel crazy person and have many around my home. This one I painted and made is pure MC in inspiration.
Everyone loves trays, and when I saw the black and white check one of MacKenzie-Childs, I had to replicate it.
I made this tuffet years ago and this is it's third transformation. I have changed it with every decor change, but now it matches the chair above.
Here are the legs that I painted.
Here is the tuffet that I made from scratch in its before and after...

  4. Your room is so pretty and you have certainly put a lot of hard work and energy into each of the special pieces. I am working on my second tuffet! I love the first I made and want to try once more!! I saw a clever idea you might want to consider - - the cord that is hanging down on the shutter - one gal pulled it up to the top center of the shutter and dropped it behind the shutter, then painted the part that showed, so it blended in - just a thought! Your guests will certainly enjoy this room - they might neve leave!

  5. What a cute room! You are really good at MKC hacks. I wish I had room for a tuffet -- I made one once, but later deconstructed it because there was no place to put it after we moved.

  6. Wow, your sewing and painting talents are amazing! I love anything MC-checked but cannot afford the 'real deal' so I buy copies. Do you accept items to paint for others? I'm probably a "no reply" reader and I do not know how to get out of that. Vicki in Louisville Ky. vcdaugo1@yahoo.com

  7. I love the MC style and what you have done with all your accomplishments to your home are fantastic and look as much or even better (since I'm sure you have even saved lots of money). You are a very creative and talented person. You should be very proud!

  8. Terry, You are really talented. The chair is so beautiful. The plant stand, pillows, tuffet, everything is, in my opinion, prettier than the MC original. It sounds like it runs in the family. Make sure you pass that talent on!

  9. I love your interpretations of MC and how you toned down/refined the style for a grown up look--but keeping the playful look! You're gOOd!
