Cute-A-Fying a Rental Kitchen!

Recently, my daughter and her family of three moved into a 'new-to-them' rental.

She wondered, "How do I make this place look cute and homey?"

We were not allowed to paint, and though the kitchen is a very small galley kitchen (saved by a roomy pantry), it has new cabinets, appliances and flooring.

And...

This bungalow house also has very high 10ft ceilings throughout. All nice features.

So what do you do when you are renting and want to cute-a-fy a space?

Here is the before. Not a good picture, however you see the high ceilings, frig on the right, just two upper cabinets on the left and two very nice and big windows letting in a lot of East facing sunlight.
First, I found this 77 inch vintage wooden ladder at a local antique store. They purchased wooden hinges from Menards and I painted the hinges white. Using just two screws in each on the wood trim, and a screw in each end of the ladder/hinge to secure, we now have added some much needed cool factor detail and interest to this space.
The ladder draws the eye up plus allows her to hang an ivy plant. I added the old blue canning jars for now just to fill the space until she decides on something else to hang. I told her that she could put soil in the jars and grow herbs.

My daughter decided to use teal as the accent color. You can see that I painted a metal wine rack on top of the upper cabinets in that color. She had a three tier basket that she painted in teal for holding various fruits.
I was given this old metal kitchen cart by a friend. It was very dirty and had rust on the top, but I cleaned it up and painted it teal for my daughter's microwave so it frees up more counter space.

Other teal accents are the succulent wash board that I made... You can read the DIY on that HERE.
And I found this old highchair...
My daughter painted it teal and added safety belts. The tray is yet to be reglued and painted, but it looks so cute in this space already.
And my granddaughter, Isla loves it...
Lastly, I made this swivel framed print for the kitchen, and you can see more on that HERE.
Least I forget, It was Isla's first birthday just a week ago and they hosted a BBQ for the grandparents last Saturday. This is what my creative daughter chalked on the pantry door...
Just goes to show, with a bit of creativity, one can transform a rental space into something functional and interesting to the eye!

  2. I'm loving that ladder above the window! And I'm loving the high chair with the cutie sitting in it ;) I live in a rental home as well and there are so many little details you can add that don't cost much and certainly don't involve construction, but make it your home! The kitchen looks lovely!!
