I am overjoyed
with the outcome
of this chair and slipcover!
Wait till you see it!
Initially, this chair looked like this...
Fairly new upholstery and very comfortable plus sturdy, this chair however, was not the look I was thinking of.
I painted the arms and legs with Annie Sloan Old White Chalk Paint then sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic. I love both of these products and am not a fan of waxing very often.
I then purchased a large drop cloth at the hardware store and used it for my custom slipcover. It was easy to use, though to be on the safe side, I washed and dried it before making this cover.
That way if it needed to be washed, it will fit beautifully once put back on this chair.
Okay, several of you will want a tutorial, but I just didn't have it in me to do one. As usual, I just 'winged' it and hoped it would come out as I had envisioned. There is so much detail that I will be able to show you though.
The bottom slipcover is separate from the top. I made it very fitted and did a pleated skirt around the hem.
To be able to keep the slipcover from moving and to keep it looking grand, I put two sets of tabs and buttons on each side. The cover easily slips over the seat and tucks under the back, with the pleated skirt going all the way around.
The top just slides down and tucks under the bottom of the back. I made wide long ties so I can tie a bow for more detail in the back. It gives a normally boring back some interest.
The top and sides fit the contour of the chair perfectly. Now, are you ready to see her in all her shabbiness?
Isn't she just charming and so welcoming?
I find her irresistible! And now for sale!

Terry! This is so cute! I love slipcovers and I especially love the big wood button detail. Perfect touch. Great job!
ReplyDeleteSimply put, you're a genius. I love how tailored the slip cover looks from the front and how well it fits the chair (looks like upholstery, really) and then the dressmaker details of the tabs and buttons, big bow in back and the flippy little pleated skirt. It turned out gorgeous, and I am duly impressed with your talent!

Wow, that is a beautiful slipcover. It fits like a glove.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the first slipcover that I truly love!! The button tabs and tieback just took it over the top!
ReplyDeleteI pretty much make things on a wing and a prayer too, so I understand not having a tutorial. Not that I'd be able to follow it if you did have one. LOL!
That is beautiful! Great job. I love the oversized wood buttons.
