I Tried & FAILED...Sort Of!

Remember when I showed you how to use a Sharpie to decorate ceramic, then bake to set it? You can see the details of that post HERE. I made this winter banner out of a plate with this method...
And a couple of more plates that I display in my home...

So, I decided that I wanted a kitchen spoon rest by my stove but not a regular kind...one fashioned with this method.
I came up with this design and used my Sharpie to draw it on the plate.
I thought it came out pretty good and started using it as I was cooking meals. Until I noticed this...
Can you see how the writing is getting lighter in areas?
How about now with this close-up picture? So I redrew it with a Sharpie and baked it again. But this still happened AGAIN. I figured that this was a FAILURE. It looks great as decor, but you can't use it. I was back to square one. Until I found this at TJ Maxx...
Simple, rectangular and pretty. It's actually better than the plate.  But all is not lost. I again redrew the words and now just have it on display in my kitchen.
So all of you that asked if it can be used, I say no! But as decor, I say YES!!!

  1. I tried this too on a mug for Father's Day, it lasted a week before the same thing happened. Looks great as long as you don't use it :) LOL

  2. Next time try the permenamel paint or Martha Stewarts all in one paint (for wood, metal, glass, fabric, etc.) Just paint on your picture, then bake - wait till the oven is cold before opening the door to remove your stuff.

  3. That also happened to me 4 years when I painted my checked "Soap Houses" to sit by my sink….just sort of fades away….but it looks cute as display!!

  4. Yes---same to me as you and all the ladies above-- : (
Apparently you actually need to use a VITRIOL MARKER for china--but they're hard to find and exPENSIVE!

  5. I like it, and like the different fonts and dept of color. It's a great piece for decor, we don't have to use every dish we have. How many dished do you buy in store and it says not to be used "for food". So you created one of those.

  6. I heard you could bake the sharpie ones, but never tried it before...Thanks for sharing at Revisionary Life Thrifty Life Thursday!

  7. I tried and failed with this, too - I finally ordered a porcelain pen, but haven't redone my project yet!
