Hello!
I did not need a dresser, nor did I need another project, but just look at it! How could I pass this up?
Actually, it started out like this below. Yes, the paint was peeling and a knob would not stay in and the back decorative piece was missing...but
They said that it was a family piece that came from England and it's solid pine. I loved the lines, I loved the feet, I loved the size and I knew what it could be!
After peeling off the paint in large sheets, I plugged the hole for the glass knob that would not stay put with a large dowel and then redrilled a smaller hole. These knobs are so unique. They are large glass one-piece knobs made with a large screw design on the back. I had never seen these before and wondered if they are original. I think they are and I will tell you more about that at the end of this post. Here is a set that I pulled off the Internet to show you what I am talking about.
After deciding on the colors of Annie Sloan Old White Chalk paint and a homemade version of their French Linen, I let her beauty shine...
I also wanted to dress up the drawers and at the top with a bit of detail, so I free-hand painted this design...
Here is a close up
I then decoupaged the inside drawer bottoms with vintage gray colored sheet music...
So, at this point, a week later, I was desperate and I was bold enough to go back to the house where I bought it...at a garage sale and asked again if they were able to locate the missing back piece. They decided that they threw it away years ago! WHAT! I didn't have a clue as to what it would have looked like. How sad. Then one evening while in the living room watching TV, I looked up and saw this...
Do you see what I was looking at? Not the wreath or deer head, but the vintage wood piece above the door that I have had for YEARS! It looked like it might fit, so I took it down and guess what?...
It fit...
I dry brushed a bit of gray on it and attached it to make the dresser complete!
Now here is the rest of the story...
I was at a store looking though the magazines when one called French Style caught my eye. I looked though it and was shocked at what I saw...
A dresser very much like mine but with missing legs and that top decorative piece...
But the same knobs...
That's when I knew that the knobs on my dresser were the original!

What a great story Terry. I can't believe the decorative back you had hanging on your wall fit that piece perfectly - it looks like it's always been there. I love your handpainted detail - so pretty! One of my favorite ASCP color combos is Old White and French Linen - they were just made for each other :) I bet this piece means even more knowing it's history. Beautiful job!

I would have bought it too ... it looks wonderful now that you've rehabbed it ! Visiting from WhatsitWednesday
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to recycle that decorative back you already had! I've passed on several pieces that had the funky ledge at the back where the original mirror fit...now I know there's a way to solve that problem.
ReplyDeleteAnd you painted that design freehand? Wow!!! Simply amazing. And those knobs...I'm still swooning!

What a wonderful transformation! That's a charming little dresser now!
ReplyDeleteI love the detail that you added...not sure I would have had the patience for all that :/ Turned out gorgeous and glad you found the back :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

Another knock-out piece Terry! I can't believe how perfect that carved piece is for it. Those knobs are stunning! Thank you for sharing at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great week!
