First Thing I Purchased on Joss and Main!

I found a shabby bookcase while looking at the Joss and Main website.

At first I didn't purchase it because I had never purchased anything on this site and whatever is purchased is non-returnable.

I had to put some thought in it and these offers don't last long.

I missed out on this the first time around.

I couldn't get it out of my head and I couldn't find anything else that I liked as well so I just waited for it to show up again.

Well, it did and this time I purchased it.

Here are my thoughts on this bookcase and my experience.

The site will tell you if it is shipped as a small package which is a cheaper shipping charge ($9.95). I thought was very reasonable. It came one month later like this...
I opened it and it looked like this but without any instructions of any kind. Notice the bottom section has a crack all the way across it.
No tools needed and I just logically figured out how to put it together. One of the spindles had a crack in the wood that compromised the screw, so I just glued and clamped it together. Hopefully it will be secure.
The problem that I thought it had was it was dry looking and that it didn't feel like it had any kind of sealer on it. I could have left it, but decided it felt chalky like when I paint furniture with Chalk Paint before I seal it. So I got out my Minwax Polycrylic Satin Finish and brushed on a couple of coats right in my foyer where I put it together.
I think it made the piece look finished (easier to dust too) and I loved it. After letting it dry, I then decided to replace the etagere that I have in the living room...

Oh yeah, I love this look now!

It will be fun to change out the decor...
On a side note, see the clay plaque on the third shelf?

A 65 year old lady handmade this plaque of our home years ago. Look how well she did!
Overall, I would purchase from Joss and Main again carefully, but I know a lot of people would not want to go through what I did to put a finish on it and fix a cracked piece after paying $232.55 for it and knowing it is not returnable, but I took a chance.

NOTE: I took the advice of a couple of people that commented, and contacted Joss and Main. They refunded me $33.39 which they said was 15% off my bookshelf. Just because it says that something is non-returnable does not mean that they will not try to fix the situation if the item is damaged or incorrect. This is good to know for the future.

I was not asked to make this review but thought that you may want to know about my experience.

  1. I have heard mixed reviews so every time I start to order something, I hesitate and then don't. Your shelf is adorable though. I really like your Bloom plate too.

  2. One time they sent me the right vase but wrong color. Caleld them and talked to a very nice guy. He told me to keep the wrong one and they sent out the right color one soon after. I hesitate, too, on items I like due to the no return policy. There are many items (especially those with fabric or wood) that I'd like to see and touch before I buy.

  3. Thanks for your post and review - I actually always go by trusted people's reviews on things like ordering from furniture and decor sites - although the occasional mishaps can happen no matter what! I recently ordered from Stonegable's At Home decor site and was SO pleased with the outcome FYI - Love the shelf and it looks great in your room :)

  5. It looks gorgeous, but I think I would have been a little disappointed to have to seal it. You did an amazing job with your vignettes, they look so pretty. Thanks also in advance for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty

  6. Thanks for the review Terry. I've never purchased anything from them but I am a big online shopper and have almost ordered several times. Best of all for you is that the shelf looks wonderful where you placed it. I love that it's a little larger and fits your space really well. As for the finish, you can honestly now say, "I built this".

  8. I have ordered many times from J & M. I have returned things when I thought the color didn't look like my computer's representation. I think their customer service is terrific. I think they will do whatever it takes to make a customer happy. And I have free shipping for a whole year. Free shipping makes all the difference for me.

I think your shelf looks great.

  9. It is nice and sealing it was a good idea so that it could be dusted easily. I can't believe the amount they asked for it though!

  10. Terry, it's a beautiful shelf set and I think it goes in your room much better than the old one. It really blends in nicely. I'm on the fence with sites like J&M. I think a lot of their stuff is overpriced, especially because I think a lot of it comes from China and could be had at other places for less. The non-return policy also makes me very nervous. I would absolutely contact them and tell them about the damage to your shelf, it was obviously not quality controlled, or if it was, they let a damaged piece get sold anyhow which to me is unacceptabel. It looks very nicely finished with the sealer, I think it was a wise choice for you to do that because I believe it will make the piece much more durable. Thank you for posting your review, as someone said in a comment above, it does matter when a trusted person gives a detailed and honest review as it is helpful to the rest of us consumers!

    Best,

    Kimberly

  11. That is a great shelf! I love the style. I have heard from another blogger that something they ordered from J&M was not worth their wild either. I have only ever ordered from One Kings Lane and so far so good. Thanx for taking the time to party at my place this week.

  12. Well! It looks gorgeous and you did a great job patching and making it work. I think that you will enjoy it. I don't think that the 15% is enough of a discount though. You still had to put all that labor into fixing and finishing it. I appreciate the review and it will probably keep me from purchasing from Joss and Main.
    Have a great weekend!

  17. Joss and Main has the worst customer service I've ever encountered. How you could send me something I didn't order and bill me and aren't willing to take it back. I have proof and they wouldn't help. A mistake on their part cost me. You take a risk with this site.

  18. I do not even know where to begin. I used to be a loyal customer with Joss and Main...NEVER AGAIN. First of all, I ordered TWO identical end tables in FEBRUARY. I received ONE end table and a media console in March. I contacted them and told them what was going on and was promised my other end table by April 15. Then it was delayed until May 3, then it was delayed until JUNE!!! AND I still have this huge media console at my house!! I HAVE BEGGED THEM TO COME PICK IT UP. MY CUSTOMER SERVICE REP, STEPHEN WITH WAYFAIR, IS TERRIBLE. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!!! YOU COULDN'T PAY ME TO BUY FURNITURE FROM THEM AGAIN!!!!!! I AM ONLY GIVING THEM ONE STAR BECAUSE THEY DO NOT GIVE THE OPTION OF ZERO STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
