Our Study / Multi Purpose Room!

Our study has changed over and over in the 11 years that we have lived here. According to the building plans, this is really the formal dining room. Though I think formal dining rooms are pretty, if you are like me, with a very small family, that can be a waste of square footage in your home.

But it's more than a study...it's a quiet sitting area, great for reading a book...or a quiet conversation.
I made this stool out of a garage sale find.
Before and after
I realize that this room is very eclectic. It has many different styles of furniture pieces that we have acquired over time that not necessarily coordinate, but as odd as it all is, it seems to work together. It also shows me the history of my life here in this house.

By the way, the two columns are antique Masonic Hall Columns that my son gave me. They closed down the Masonic Hall in his tiny town in Kansas and were going to burn them! The other two that do not match these two, are in our basement media room. Here is what they looked like when we drove from Illinois to Kansas to pick them up. Luckily they screw apart. I did some swapping with each section that screwed apart that make up what I have in my home now.
The ones used here between the foyer and the study are the gold, red and blue ones. The globes are used as decor in other areas of my home since they didn't fit on the columns with the way I decided to use this set.

This corner is used as my office. I have my laptop and printer here and this is where I blog.
There are two open passageways in this room, one is the large opening with the columns leading to the foyer, this other passageway leads to a hall directly to the back of the house where the kitchen is located.
In a recent post HERE, I showed you a vintage French China Hutch that I painted. Before my Grandma passed away, she gave me her Mother's china. Now I have a perfect place to store these precious heirlooms.

Here is the Before and After.
In preparation for this piece, I needed to tone down the green that I painted the alcove walls and part of the ceiling, I used a quieter tan that is also found in the wallpaper. I anticipate that I will be rewallpapering this some time when I find the right paper. Here is the green before.

  2. You always give me great inspiration. Love it... Looks so inviting and I've always wondered where you found the columns. Vintage are so rare in my area and when you do find them very pricey. I also admire the hutch that used to be in the alcove, I would love to have it in my home.!

  5. Terry I love how nicely you have made this lovely space for yourself! What a GREAT use of a formal dining room if you aren't needing it for such!

The columns - brilliant, seriously. Seems as though your son TOTALLY gets his Momma - look how perfect they are in that space, WOW! Custom made awesomeness.

    Well done, ma'am!

  7. Hi Terry, I love your multi-purpose study - it's very well put together and so pretty. It would be easy to work and relax in that space. I pinned it at the DIY Sunday Showcase Talent Board on Pinterest. Have a great weekend!
