What Is It?

At first glance I thought this was a vintage bird cage stand.

But it was so much taller than any I had ever seen or owned.
Then I read the raised lettering across the claw feet...
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Rapids Dress Form Co.
I researched it and think it is a hanging dress form holder. For now, I have my wedding dress hung from it in honor of my 19th wedding anniversary this month.

Anyone got anymore ideas on what this stand is?

  1. You look beautiful..... your wedding picture is lovely! I would never have guessed that was what the stand was for....but it works. Wouldn't it be fun to have your mother's or grandmother's to hang on there too?

  5. Such a pretty dress, and such a pretty bride!

Terry, back in the day, didn't dress form manufacturers actually make dress forms like the kind we normally see that are on poles attached to stands like this (which often have wheels), but instead of having a finial on the top of the "neck" they had a hook? The hook part would hang from the loop on this stand, and the form itself could be removed. Maybe because the stand doesn't have wheels and is not very portable, they made the dress form removable? I swear I've seen something like that before, but I think that type of dress form is actually quite rare. It would be interesting if you could find a form with a hook to hang on the stand!

ETA, I'm not crazy ... well, at least not about this. Here's a hanging dress form somewhat like the type I mentioned: http://www.rubylane.com/item/287526-2965/Wolf-Hanging-Full-Body-Dress

However, I'm wondering, because the bowed-out portion of the pole looks so much like a bird cage stand, if someone didn't in fact actually attach an old iron bird cage stand to the base portion of the dress form? You may have an item that is actually two antique or vintage parts married together, which means it's appropriate it's being used to hang your wedding gown!

    Best,

    Kimberly

  8. Maybe it's a home made bird cage stand? Sort of like you do often to make lamps...take a dress form base, add the hanger part that needed a base, and presto - bird cage stand. On the other hand, maybe the Grand Rapids Dress Form Company also made stands for things besides dress forms.
