Tin Ceiling Shelf

If you have a good memory and have been following me for a while, you might remember when we returned from a Kansas visit. (My son lives in Kansas)

We always go antiquing along the way and picked a whole SUV load of goodies that we brought back.

Can you spy what is on top of the pile? Above all the cool pillar parts that is.

ShoeTree

What happens when you

with a vintage wooden shoe form?

This is what you get...

Cute cloche!

This is nothing new, just too cute.

Everyone has seen these all over the place, at garage sales and thrift stores, etc.

They start out life as a cheese holder...

2011 Ornaments

Each year, I make ornaments for my family and this year I have taken on a MacKenzie Childs look. I hope they like them.

I purchased these wooden stockings unfinished at Hobby Lobby last year...after Christmas. Then I painted them this year. Do you think I captured the essence of MacKenzie Childs?

I also made the black and white check balls too and will share with you a tutorial on that soon.

I always put the name or initial of the person it is going to, the date on front or back and my name on back.

A Fern Stand Pedestal To Love

I fell in love...AGAIN!

But not with her!

Because, I have loved her for years.

She was discovered on clearance at Hobby Lobby with a damaged nose. I rescued her, brought her home and put putty on her damaged nose. Then I did a subtle faux finish all over on her and she has been a treasure ever since.

But this post is not all about her! It's about another Diamonds In The Rough! treasure that I found on week 4 garage sales.

Remember this wood pedestal?

I paid too much for this ($20) at an estate sale. I thought it was old. Hubby says he thinks it's vintage, but someone's high school wood class project based on clues he saw. Oh well, you win some and lose some. However Hubby said that all was not lost and that he could fix it up for me.

The top was badly warped so to the trash it went. I found a new wood piece on eBay. Then the base had to go...that would just leave the turned middle walnut part as the original.  I found a round piece of pine, new, for $1 at a local thrift store. I also had some legs saved back unused from another table.  Hubby married all these new pieces together with the center turned part and made it quite a looker!

He called it a table, but it's too high for that label. So I call it a
Fern Stand Pedestal!
I hope you like it as much as I do. Enjoy looking at how I decorated with it after I did my paint treatment.
Hubby also made me this cute birdhouse out of old bullseye trim.

She feels like a Queen sitting up high on this new stand!

Welcome Surprise!

Here
is
your
hint...

With
a
SURPRISE!

Okay, I'm teasing you! Basically, I found a wooden tray at a garage sale for only $1. It was already painted black.
Instead of keeping it a tray, I decided to make it into a usable wall art!
First, I painted the word, "Welcome" with some vines and leaves in white.
I also attached these metal hangers to the back so I could attach ribbon for hanging.

So what is the surprise? It's the oval in the center...
I painted the inside oval with chalkboard paint. Now when we come home and enter through the back door from the garage to the laundry room, we are welcomed home!
Then I did a bit of tweaking...
I added a sweet yellow bird for whimsy

I have fond memories of a small chalk board at the back door entrance of my Grandma's house. As a child, I would sit on top of the washer and write and draw on this chalkboard and just get lost in the creativity of it. Do you have memories of something simple and small at your Grandparents home that wasn't big but you still remember it fondly?

The Table Dance

Have you ever done the table dance? Okay, get your mind right for this one! I mean, where you swap one table in your home for another and move the original one to a different location.

Let me start the story from the beginning...it's a cheap thrill of a story too!

Last year during garage sale season, Hubby and I went to a garage sale and happened upon a sad antique table that needed love, as most of them do. It needed man repairs and he was up for the task. It was $3.50 and hubby is my fix the wobble or what's broke and I do all the refinishing/painting.  He took apart the broken legs, (someone half-attempt-of-fixing-them) and re-glued them correctly. Sorry I didn't take a before picture. But imagine a Duncan Phyfe side table of solid walnut that is all scratched, broken and ugly. Believe me, they probably thought when we bought it that we were crazy! Or were really thankful that we took this off their hands!  So I refinished the top and found a beautiful inlay design and just couldn't put paint on this beauty.  So here she is, all curvy legs and back in her prime.
She even has a functioning drawer and all original hardware!
Beautiful brass toes at the end of her curvy legs.
And a top that can't be beat. Remember, $3.50 and a bit of glue, stripping and a lot of love.

Sorry, this post is getting rather long...but you will love it in the end.

Now on to the next table. During one of my Diamonds In The Rough! posts, where I purchase garage sale items, show them to you and promise to reveal the after of what I have done with them. This is the before table.
Don't be distracted by all my other treasures. This table cost me three whole dollars. However it is deceiving. The table top was totally ruined. It was not salvageable even for the hubby. Look up in the upper left hand corner of the picture. See the missing part on the table top. Well trust me, it is worse than it even looks there. So he kindly cut me a new 18 x 18 wood square, routered the edge and we reused the original rope trim on top to mimic what was originally the look of the table. I then did my thing with paint, distressing, stain and dry brushing.
I'm loving all the detail on this beauty!
Now for the table dance. Since my sofa has taller arms and the area that the curvy walnut table was in seemed to be the perfect size for the taller white table, I swapped them out and sent the walnut table next to the side chair in the study. Don't you think this white beauty looks perfect in her new location?

Who said it takes a lot of money to decorate with taste? Just give a piece ready for the trash some love!

Vintage Clock Case revived into a Sweet Display Case!

As I was looking around on eBay, I ran across a wooden clock case minus the clock works. The auction was about the expire without any bids and it was only $7...$14 with shipping. So I bid on it and won.

This is what it looked like when I received it. Yes, it needed love and was tired, but I had a vision!

I purchased some resin roses online. I glued them to the bottom area, to embellish it (see above picture). I then cleaned and took apart the door from the base. I sanded and painted the wood. I asked hubby to cut me a shelf that would be installed at the area where the wood mullion divided the glass on the door.

I put it all back together and added old sheet music to the back of the inside and hung on my guest bedroom wall.

A fun, easy project that took the interest of an old vintage piece and made it into an awesome display unit.

Just look at all the details on the crown molding.

From Table To Clockface!

Have you ever had something that just wasn’t working in your home? A piece of cheap furniture is what I am referring to. You know those cheap, screw-in, three legged tables that are not as stablethreeleggedtable2 as you want them to be.

I found one for $2 at a flea market. I thought that I really got a deal and that I could use it for a display I was asked to do at church. Then I used it at home and set a Christmas tree on during the holidays but one of the legs just wanted to give way. It was just not a good functioning piece of furniture.

Yes, I could have sweet talked hubby into fixing it. And I could have painted it a fun color like these.

Aren’t they cute?

Then I had a light-bulb moment!

lightbulb

What about making a clock face out of it for my exercise room. I have a clock theme going on in there, so why not? I got the paints out and did my thing. What do you think?

Newly painted clockface with vintage folkart Chinese Checkerboard that I painted.

Here are some various other clock faces going on in this room.

So what do gameboards and clockfaces have in common? I don't know, I just like them and they are displayed in my exercise room.
