Faux Spool Cabinet

This is too good not to write a post about! I have loved antique spool cabinets for as long as I can remember. And since I have been sewing for 50 years, it makes sense that I love them.
Since I didn't want to pay the price that these cabinets cost, I thought I could finally make my own version of it.
I found this cabinet on a local Facebook site for sale for $20. It looked a bit rough to me but something that I could work with.
When I got it, it stunk sooooo bad. As well as having a bad paint job. I cleaned it well, letting it set in the sun all day then painted it inside and out (except for the drawer fronts) with a Kilz product that seals wood and stink. Then, I stripped the drawer fronts to reveal solid walnut. With the drawers being double dovetailed, front and back and the style of the cabinet, my husband dated it to 1870's to early 1900. Sadly the top which I would have wanted to strip back to the walnut, was just a piece of plywood.

Using a product called Amazing, I molded my own forms for the missing trim pieces by placing this clay product over the parts that were there. Then using a liquid resin of the same product name, I made my own casting of the missing knobs and trim, (you can see these in white).

I also took the opportunity to do something fun with the plywood top using yardsticks and new trim. I used the Silhouette Electronic Cutter program and my Silhouette to design and cut stencils for all the wording I needed.

After some labor of love here is the final outcome.

I am in love with it. And it will find a home in my sewing room today.

From Boring to Crazy Cool Light Fixture

Okay, so I have been MIA again.
I have a good excuse...I have been working on a surprise for my daughter-in-law's baby shower, but I can't share that with you yet...
And helping my daughter start her Etsy account full of cool stuff she (with my help) has made...but I can't share that with you yet either!
And playing with my granddaughter, Isla Rose...
But the biggest thing, is helping my daughter get ready for her wedding Oct. 7! That's right, she had the baby first and now Isla's Mommy and Daddy are getting married! I am making the wedding dress so I will share that with you when it's done.

Front Porch Changes

We just had our roof re-shingled. Plus the gutter guys are coming next week, so changes are happening. My young and cute, handy dandy handyman can really do ANYTHING! He and his crew tore the old off and put the new shingles on. As usual, I had more on my list for him to do...

Sweet BoHo Baby Girl's Room

The fun decorating continues...

This time with my granddaughter's bedroom.

They rent this home, so we were limited with how creative we could be with the walls.

This is looking in the room from the doorway...

Cute-A-Fying a Rental Kitchen!

Recently, my daughter and her family of three moved into a 'new-to-them' rental.

She wondered, "How do I make this place look cute and homey?"

We were not allowed to paint, and though the kitchen is a very small galley kitchen (saved by a roomy pantry), it has new cabinets, appliances and flooring.

And...

This bungalow house also has very high 10ft ceilings throughout. All nice features.

So what do you do when you are renting and want to cute-a-fy a space?

Vintage Swivel Frames

All I wanted was one vintage swivel frame. I just like them. On a trip to see my son and family last year, I mentioned to my oldest sister that I was on the lookout for one.

Let Love Grow Tutorial!

In my possession was this rusty old scrub/wash board.

In my possession (sort of, go with me here) is a grown daughter setting up her new white kitchen with turquoise/blue accents.

In my possession is my creative brain and my daughter's recent words to me, "Mom, I really like the saying, 'Let Love Grow'."
Plus her love of succulents...

So I put the two together and came up with this live wall art.

How To Make Asian Beetles Run Away!

Do you have a problem with these stinky, biting Asian Beetles in your house? I do and I heard that you can use Lemon Oil on the areas they like to infest.  Instead of Lemon Oil for furniture polishing...

Logic Won Out!

First, I must say that one of the benefits that go with blogging is being able to categorize my pictures of projects and know when I did them.

Time flies and I just don't realize how much has been done until I see all the pictures and how long ago I did each one.

Now on to the reason that logic won out.

I have a favorite Purdy paint brush that I use to cut in the walls before rolling on the paint. Mine was worn out and I needed a new replacement. As I was buying one at Sherwin Williams, I found a beautiful gallon of blue/gray miss tint paint for $5.

I bought it too.

Why I Call My Guest Bedroom The MC Room!

I love MacKenzie-Childs style and if you never heard of them or haven't visited their store or website, you are really missing out in my book.

The style is so fun and whimsical. I am especially attracted to their Courtly Check.

But I am not willing to pay their high prices! I find that it takes the joy out of owning something if it's just way over priced for me.

So I take my talents in sewing and painting and make my own versions of what inspires me about MacKenzie-Childs.

Here is a sampling of what I have done...
