Subway Art Chair

This chair is an old telephone chair that I found at a garage sale. Sorry, but I failed you by not taking a picture of the before chair.  But, I can give you a visual...it was smaller than a regular chair but larger than a child's chair. It was brown wood with an angled seat that was covered in horrible worn material and the wood seat was broken in two.  Sounds real pretty, huh? Well, I picked up this ugly duckling knowing that I could make it into some kind of beauty. First off to hubby. He made sure that it was sound and glued the seat back together. He then cut the seat straight and gave it a new router-ed edge.

I painted it white. Then as I was in a completely different frame of mind with what to do with it, I remembered that I love subway art and thought that this piece would be perfect for it. And so easy. I used vinyl lettering and just laid them on the seat. I painted the seat black, added touches of black and white check on the legs and back. Then when it was dry, I removed the vinyl lettering. A couple coats of sealer and now it's ready for someone elses home, since I haven't any room for it here. Terry

Master Bedroom Tour

The master bedroom in this home is the first bedroom of four upstairs. I painted the walls by mixing all kinds of left-over paint along with a $1 gallon Sherwin Williams miss-tint paint. People ask me all the time what the color is and I just don't know...custom green I guess! My young and cute handy dandy handyman and I put in the new hand scraped hardwood elm flooring last summer.
WARNING, this post could get lengthy because I will tell you a bit about everything made in this room.

First, the shutter headboard. I purchased these shutters at auction. I had my young and cute handy dandy handyman make a headboard out of them. Knowing it was going to be large, I asked him to attach two shutters together, add a separating board at the base to screw the bed frame into and add a removable crown molding on top. This headboard comes apart in three pieces for moving. This is what he brought me back after taking the shutters home to work on the project. I just painted the crown and bottom board to match the shutters. The header above the headboard is detailed in this past post.

I made the pillows on the bed and the small monogramed pillow was made using a letter stencil with acrylic paint and fabric medium mixed.

I also made the curtains, though they were very easy. I purchased lace that was a green color with white leaf design. I just hemmed the top and bottom, added fringe and hung using curtain clips and rings.

The night stand was a $3 garage sale find that looked like this (below).
I sanded and painted it white with some black accents. The top I painted to look like black marble (below).

I designed and printed off this found saying, then just framed it.
Double crown molding tray ceiling. I painted the ceiling in two colors of tan then
added a glaze to blend.
The ceilings (above) are a large tray with double crown molding. On the other side of the bed, is a reproduction pie crust table. The chandelier is a $2 garage sale find. I just wired it into a plug and covered the chain with a green cord cover.
Fabric shades were purchased.

The vanity was given to me by a friend that I helped with a bunch of decorating. She had purchased it at a garage sale and painted it a soft pink. I painted it white then added the painted details.

Vanity top has garage sale finds on top.
The vanity chair looked like this from the thrift store where I purchased it (below).

I painted it white then added the roses (below), and reupholstered it.
This was taken before I added the double black and white welting around the fringe. This tied it in with the black and white check I painted on the vanity.

The MacKenzie Childs inspired chair and tuffet are talked about in this post. However, I haven't talked about the fireplace. We found the old metal fireplace surround at a local antique store. I then found the existing fireplace mantel at a garage sale. Hubby had to do some alterations because the hole was too large for the metal surround. We added trim to cover the area and I painted it white. Hubby also made me a wooden box that I painted to look like brick. Then I just purchased three 18 inch tiles to lay on the floor, set the fireplace on top and added a candle stand inside.
Took this picture as I was priming the piece.

The oak dresser was purchased at a thrift store and was painted yellow. I stripped it down to the oak. The dress form with my wedding dress is detailed in this past post. The rest is just wall 'stuff' that I will talk about in captions under the pictures.
Purse collection hanging from glass knobs. Rose oil painting from antique store. Lamp and metal scroll above picture from Hobby Lobby. Hand and necklace holder from TJ Maxx.
Vintage spoon rack  I painted white and use to hang a hankie collection.

T and M from Hobby Lobby. Collection of real early 1900's postcards of women.

I added the roses to the frame and painted it white.

Birdcage and framed lace glove from garage sales. Metal chandelier from Hobby Lobby.

Garage sale plates.
Old frame painted white from garage sale. I added three ribbon covered wires to the back and hung my grandmother's collection of hankies.
This room is definitely not large by today's standards especially after the new king mattress came two weeks ago! But it functions well for sleeping, ironing while watching TV mounted above the faux fireplace...it swivels around, and I love all the windows! Terry

Follow Your Dreams Painted Chair

This was an old wooden folding church chair (I did not take a before picture) that I picked up at a garage sale for $1. Initially, I had decided to paint it for my son. It has slats on the back and seat and was a really dirty piece that needed a bit of work and a lot of love. I painted it black, then painted the back to look like the sky with a saying of, "Always remember to follow your dreams...".  The seat is a scene of an old cabin in the woods by a pond. I thought just perfect for my son.

When I was finished, hubby said that my son would not like it, so I sold it instead and painted a different wooden chair to look like camouflage for my son.

Later, I showed a picture of this chair to my son and he loved it so I painted this same picture for him on a board to hang on the wall instead. The hubby is usually right about what my son likes and doesn't but that time I think he was wrong. Terry

Garage Sale Dream Come True!

I am so excited to share this with you. A couple of weeks ago I was reading the evening paper and saw an ad for a Garage Sale...IN DECEMBER. Now, it's very cold where I live in the winter and it's even more unusual to see a garage sale ad this time of year. However it said that it was indoor...so I thought that I would go.
To my astonishment, this dress form is what I saw first! I have wanted one of these for so long, but they are too expensive for my taste.  Here's the best part, I ask the seller how much he wants for it and he tells me 250. I KNOW that they are expensive but hey, this IS a garage sale! Then he says to me, "Surely you will take it for $2.50!" I said, "SOLD".  Yes that's right, I got this beauty for only two dollars and fifty cents.

My mind races on creativity overload when this happens and I am already thinking of what I can do with her. When I get home, I search my home for a book that I can tear up. I am known for decorating with books for lifts and levels and found one that the spine was torn. It was a Spanish book, but what the heck! Here (above) you see me already covering her in the pages.
Here she is all done in all her glory!

I took her upstairs in my Master Bedroom and dressed her first in a fancy hat.

And finally in my wedding dress. Yep, I love her and here she will stay. Terry

My Sewing/Craft Room Tour

See this cute little cat? Her name is Samantha. Her friend is Sugar...the bunny!
The bird was free hand too.

These were our pets and I hand painted them on the wall in my sewing/craft room. The birdbath was painted using a stencil. Sadly, both Samantha and Sugar are in heaven now. However, I want to share with you the place in my home that I love to create in.
It's a small room in the basement that the previous owner built a wall of built-ins for his office.  See that dollhouse below? I made that but didn't add the inside. Instead, it fits right over my sewing machine to keep the dust off it when not in use and makes it look a bit whimsical in the room. I have been sewing since I was eight and made all my own clothes. Now I mostly make curtains, pillows and that kind of thing. I do alter my clothes and those of my hubby's. I guess since I was forced to make my own clothes at a young age, I rebel by not doing it now.
Picket fence border is from Sherwin Williams.

I also made the skirting velcroed on the counter-top edge to hide more supplies that are stored underneath.
Garage sale platter matches the material used in this room.

The table (above) was a 'new-marriage' piece of furniture that my in-laws were no longer using. The top is Formica so it's easy to clean off any glue or paint. It also has two leaves so it extends very long and is handy when making long drapes, etc. The legs and edges are real wood so I painted them. You will have to click on the picture to enlarge it to see some of the details. Click again and the picture will become huge to really see the details. Back up when done looking and you will be back to the post. The old sewing machine was purchased at a flea market.
Garage sale find.

I did this crewelwork in 1977 from a pattern in a Family Circle Magazine!

This is a very old doll pattern given to me by my ex grandmother in law.

This cross-stitch picture was a gift.

Old sewing supplies that I collect.

I purchased this chair (below) for $5 at a garage sale. It was painted white. I painted it black and made the round seat cushion.
I made this pillow...probably the most fun thing I love to make are pillows!
I covered the storage shelving unit with the same material and used Velcro to attach it at the top. The black skirt and top are old (1900's) mourning outfit that I purchased at auction.   Terry
