Love Affair

I have had a love affair for the past 35 years! It just spoke to me right down to the core of my soul. Maybe because it's been a part of my life since I was a very young girl. Then tragedy struck and I thought it was lost...Forever!

What could I be talking about? This...

A sweet tiny Singer Sewing Machine! You see, I have been sewing since I was 8 years old. My Mother said, "Make your own clothes or go naked!" She meant it.  The history of this machine is that my ex-Mother-In-Law owned it. She didn't sew, but loved antiques and taught me all about how to appreciate antiques and their history. She knew that I loved this baby...
When I first laid eyes on it, she was quite different. She looked a lot like this...
Sadly, last year, right before Christmas my ex In-Laws house burnt to the ground.  And I thought that along with the home was my dream to own this lovely.

My 29 year old son (30 in a week) came to visit me and brought a gift...
He said that he waded through the hot spots after the house burnt and found this just for me. I was so surprised and taken with a cross between sadness and joy. Joy to finally have her to call as my own and the thoughtfulness of my boy. Sadness, because it was burnt and that just this past July, my ex Mother-In-Law passed away.

Now she is as polished as she can get with a deep history that only I can tell. You see, my hubby asked me what I wanted today for my birthday. I said all I wanted was this burnt girl cleaned up as much as he could. I think he did a great job.

I will treasure her and her special history.

  7. I have one of these, I'd always wanted one. My mom bought it during the summer at an estate sale, then she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away just after Thanksgiving. My dad wrapped it up for me for Christmas, and told me about the story of her buying it. So mine is in good condition, not a family piece but the last Christmas gift from my mom, so it is very special to me.

  8. This is one of the best stories I have heard.

I know you will remember the love as much as the joy every time you look at your treasure.

  9. Oh Terry that is a treasure for sure. So glad your sweet son was able to save it. My In-Laws house burned down two years ago. I know all too well the sadness that is associated with such a tragedy.

  10. What a wonderful husband and son you must have. It is beautiful. My Great Aunt had an old sewing machine and desk similar to this, she lost her battle with cancer over a year ago, but when ever I see something like this it fondly reminds me of her. Thank you for sharing at bacon time.
