Electrifying Sconces

It took me a while, but I finally DID IT!

What did I do?

Well, years after making two sconces and using them for wall art, I FINALLY electrified them.

Let's go back to the beginning...

I purchased two of these sconces at a garage sale.  I think I paid 50¢ for them.

I then found two metal framed mirrors at Hobby Lobby and I liked the finish, so I painted the sconces to closely match the frames.

I took them to a glass shop and asked them to drill two holes in each mirror, one for the sconce bracket to hold it tightly to the mirror and one for the wiring to come through.

Well, I got as far as putting it all together, but never electrified them, see?
They just sat on the wall and looked pretty!

All I had to do is purchase lamp replacement cord that already had the wall plug on one end and bare wires on the other. I placed the wire through the bottom frame area, because luckily the frames have holes cut into the decoration. Then just connected the wires, covered with wire nuts and hung back on the wall by the nail. I also added crystal glass bobeches to each of the candle lights to enhance them further.
I do have the cord showing but that is something I will live with. I don't want to hire an electrician to hard wire them into the walls because I tend to move things around on the walls and this would make them permanent.
I do like the fact that I put them on a timer and they come on in the evening and go off at bedtime.
For this convenience and the look, I think I can live with the exposed cords.

  1. Were these just for candles before?
I have a pair similar, never thought I could electrify them.
    Well done.

  2. These were already wired but when I put them on the mirrored frames, I didn't go any further with wiring them to the house electric. It might be a bit of challenge to wire sconces that were initially for candles.

  5. Love the look! To further hide the cord, just paid it the same color as the wall. Then if you ever move them to another room you can paint them again to match that room color. They will be stiff, but that's ok because they don't or wont or shouldn't get touched anyway. Thanks for sharing. SuZ
