A Story of A Table Rescued From The Trash!

Hubby and I went to Kansas to visit my son last fall.

As I was sitting on his front porch, admiring the details of this table,  I asked about it. My son's girlfriend said that her Grandma had given it to her. I guess that she used it for a while, but no longer wanted it and it was destined for the trash.

I told her to let me have it and I can transform it and they could have it back.  They said that no matter what I did with it, they did not want it back.
Before
Initially, I was going to do some kind of MacKenzie Childs look to it. But knowing that I was also not going to keep it and that my daughter needed another end table for her apartment, I decided to make this my first project with Annie Sloan's chalk paint and wax! Have you tried it yet?

I have found these things about this popular chalk paint:

a) It goes on very easily without much prep of the piece first and no priming needed.

b) The cost of the paint was somewhat expensive but it goes a long way, so the cost factor  becomes less.

c) The dark wax is difficult to control even though I was very careful to use very little and wiped the brush on a paper towel first before applying. The clear wax does all the magic with aging and bringing out the beauty of the chalk paint.

d) Overall, I would not want to use this chalk paint on every piece I have to paint, BUT I do love the ease and outcome of this look. And with the right furniture piece, this paint is really cool paint.

For this table I used the Old Ochre and then topped it with the Old White.
I used the clear wax overall, distressed it, then highlighted the distressing with the dark wax. I then did a follow-up all over wax with the clear.  The charm came when the wax sat overnight then the luster happened when I buffed it the next day! This is a fun product for anyone to use.

The camera's eye just doesn't do these pieces justice as in real life. I have seen many beautifully done chalk paint furniture on Blogland, but now that I have used it myself, I know the beauty this chalk paint can bring to furniture.

See the egg & dart detail. The carving. The spindle legs. The little balls on the ends.

I am surprised when someone wants to throw away a perfectly good piece of furniture. With a bit of love (and elbow grease), this beauty can be used and enjoyed for years to come.
Now my daughter will enjoy this piece.

  10. It turned out great,Terry! I'll bet they secretly want it back now! : ) I found the same thing with the dark wax and I've mentioned it in the post I'm drafting for my rescued dresser {I'm just doing the baskets now and I can't wait to show it}. It is such a good size little table, I think I'm with the group that can't believe it was destined for the trash.
