I was so OVER my stripe wallpaper...
I had been wanting to put book pages on my walls FOREVER...
After much thought...
I came up with the perfect idea!
To refresh your memory...
The study walls had Waverly stripe wallpaper. A few years ago (probably longer than a few), I was at Lowe's and found clearance wallpaper...3 rolls to be exact that I bought for a whopping $3. At the time, I was going to use them to wrap gifts! Yes, wallpaper makes really good wrapping paper because it's thick!
Then, one day after finding the unused wallpaper in my storage area, I realized that I liked it because it had all the colors in my home at that time. And I also realized that I had just enough to paper the study! Who else can say they wallpapered a room with a name brand wallpaper for only $3?
I was tired of the stripe and have always swooned over book pages on walls when I would see pictures online and in magazines.
The reason that I had kept putting it off is because, the thought of removing the book pages off the walls when I was tired of that look was daunting...until I came up with the solution!
Since I know the proper way to hang wallpaper (I took a class way back in 1977), and had 'sized' the walls before I applied the Waverly stripe, I knew that taking it down would be relatively easy. So why not paper the book pages right over the wallpaper. Therefore, when I was tired of this new look, I could just pull on the wallpaper under the pages and it all would come off easily...in theory! Some day I will see if this theory is correct. But for now I am enjoying the new look.
I ran this idea by my sister, Susan and she suggested that I take a leftover piece of wallpaper and using wallpaper paste, paste a sample page on it to see if I could see the stripe through the book page. Well, I could and I didn't like that.
Enter this 1911 book with thicker pages! It didn't show the stripe under the page! Yeah, so I proceeded on.
After researching online pictures of walls done in book pages, I found one pattern that was appealing to my orderly, organized self.
Basically, I started from the bottom first using a full page, then the next page, beside the full one, would be a half page. I was able to stair-step my way across the wall with all full pages after the first course was done. I was careful to use a damp cloth to wipe any glue that oozed out so it wouldn't leave shinny glue areas on the wall.
I liked the neat and organized look of this layout...
And love the fact that its slightly yellowed page edges make it vintage looking.
I even covered the light switch plate with a book page.
Oh how happy I am with this new look...and I did the whole room with one thick book and only had a few half pages left when done. Am I lucky or what?...and guess what, this was under $3...more like 50¢! I already had the leftover paste and the book cost that at a garage sale! Yes, I know, I'm cheap!

Terry, have you read the book yet? LOL. It turned out really nice. I like it so much better than the wallpaper. It gives the room a rich look! Your Sis, Susan
ReplyDeleteI love this wall treatment and the placement of the pages. I want to try this but don't want to glue them directly onto the wall in case I tire of it down the line.
ReplyDeleteThe book pages make a wonderful background for your study. Great job.
LOVE THIS! Some day I would love to have an office/library that I could do something like this... so CUTE! <3
ReplyDeleteLove it! I saw the same on another site 3 years ago. It still looks very good. This is so cool!
