A Fern Stand Pedestal To Love

I fell in love...AGAIN!

But not with her!

Because, I have loved her for years.

She was discovered on clearance at Hobby Lobby with a damaged nose. I rescued her, brought her home and put putty on her damaged nose. Then I did a subtle faux finish all over on her and she has been a treasure ever since.

But this post is not all about her! It's about another Diamonds In The Rough! treasure that I found on week 4 garage sales.

Remember this wood pedestal?

I paid too much for this ($20) at an estate sale. I thought it was old. Hubby says he thinks it's vintage, but someone's high school wood class project based on clues he saw. Oh well, you win some and lose some. However Hubby said that all was not lost and that he could fix it up for me.

The top was badly warped so to the trash it went. I found a new wood piece on eBay. Then the base had to go...that would just leave the turned middle walnut part as the original.  I found a round piece of pine, new, for $1 at a local thrift store. I also had some legs saved back unused from another table.  Hubby married all these new pieces together with the center turned part and made it quite a looker!

He called it a table, but it's too high for that label. So I call it a
Fern Stand Pedestal!
I hope you like it as much as I do. Enjoy looking at how I decorated with it after I did my paint treatment.
Hubby also made me this cute birdhouse out of old bullseye trim.

She feels like a Queen sitting up high on this new stand!

Trellis~Not Just For Outside!

On a recent garage sale hunt for treasures, I found a unique trellis for $4.  You can see my post of that from Week 7 of garage sale finds in my weekly feature, Diamonds In The Rough! HERE.

My full intention for this trellis was the traditional, put-it-outside-and-grow-a-vine-on-it!

As I was cleaning it yesterday and sanding it to get it ready for new paint,

I had one of these...

A Light bulb moment!

I decided that it would add texture and whimsy INSIDE the house! So I mulled this idea over in my head and came up with a plan.

In my master bedroom, I have a wall next to the faux fireplace that holds vintage purses on drawer knobs mounted to the wall.

I figured that the awesome and unique trellis could do that job better AND do it with whimsy. Plus, I decided to leave the trellis shabby and not give it a new face lift with paint.

So I filled all the holes in the wall and painted them with the green paint to repair the damage I had done. (I move things around on my walls A LOT, so I have to fix all the holes I cause, but hey, thats what happens when you have a decor illness like I do!)

While the paint was drying, I ventured into my stash of hand painted knobs I designed and painted a few years back.

I laid the trellis on the floor and placed the purses where I thought they would look good. I then knew where to place the knobs.  Instead of drilling holes in the trellis and using screws, I just brought out the Super Glue and glued the knobs right onto the trellis.

Now for the reveal! I am in love with the look (at least for now) and even have one knob without a purse so I can have something to find on my Diamonds In The Rough! treasure hunts! Enjoy...

The making of my Garden Cupola!

My mind is always creating something. I think it's conditioning from growing up with our family money tight in the Air Force. If we wanted something, Mom would say, "If you want it bad enough then find a way to make it". Easier said than done, but we made almost everything it seemed.

Fast forward to adulthood. I have always admired the cupolas on top of barns. They just seem interesting to me and I wanted one in my garden. So this would mull around in my brain until one day a house builder friend stopped by, quite unexpected and gave me two old windows. They were rather large and I asked him if he happened to have two more. He said yes and that he knew I would make something out of them instead of just throwing them in the dumpster. Here is what I started with.
I also went to a garage sale and found a HUGE finial for only a dollar! If you can find these this big at the hardware store, they run about $15! So I called my young and cute handy, dandy handyman since the Hubby was busy and asked him to put together my vision.
I also purchased four sheets of the plastic look-a-like tin ceiling tiles and metal flashing at the hardware store for the top. The young and cute, handy dandy handyman and I made this cupola and set it in my garden. Some of the windows were busted out, but this works well for air to pass through and the wind to not be able to knock it over. This turned out very large and is taller than I am. But with the sky as my ceiling, I need larger items outside.

I placed a Bashful Betsy statute in the inside center and have a landscaping light shining on her at night. This looks very impressive in my back yard.

This is a dream that came to reality!

Diamonds In The Rough~Treasures Week 7

For those of you that don't know, Diamonds In The Rough! is my weekly summer feature that chronicles my garage sale and thrift store finds. I then transform them and show you what I made or used the treasures for.

I was unable to go to garage sales on Friday because I had one myself. We did really well and sold just about everything. It is so cleansing to get rid of things in my home that I no longer want or need. Since I create so much 'stuff', I need a good cleansing or two!

Okay, then Saturday arrives with cold and rain. I guess I can be thankful that our garage sale was beautiful sunny warm weather. But I went out anyway.  I got a like new air conditioner for my daughter's apartment for a song. The people that I bought it from said that they only used it one 24 hour period because their central A/C went out. It will be perfect for her apartment and I had purchased another one that was used only one month from a doctor on Craiglist. These are small one room window units but they were packaged in their original boxes and looked brand new. So these two should cool her whole tiny apartment.

On to the fun pictures. Remember this NEW recliner that I bought at a last week garage sale for only $30 for my daughter's new apartment?

Well, I found a nice accent pillow (One that I didn't have to make) for this chair. The lady said that it was silk and was custom made for her and cost her $50. Both sides of the pillow look like this too. Very much quality. The lady used it for a while then was 'over it'. I bought it for this chair for...are you ready?

...for only $1

So for that price, I don't care if my daughter ruins it.

Yes, most of the treasures I bought, but not all, were for my daughter...

And I keep saying that I am going to quit buying for her apartment but I keep finding great bargains just right for her space!

Found these rugs for my daughter's kitchen, $4 for both.
Large area rug for my daughter's living room, $3.

Two (2) cream colored woven fabric roman shades, $5 each for my daughter's bedroom.
A beautiful old blue and white covered serving dish, only $4, I couldn't pass it up.
Look at all the wonderful patina age has given it!
A really sweet and well made trellis for my gardens, $4

Other friends and neighbors put things in my garage sale on Friday. When it's over, I donate the remainder of the unsold items to charity. This bowl was an item that was leftover from a neighbor. She said that I could keep it and so I thought it would be good to use it to display my vintage Christmas ornaments that I got last week at a garage sale. Imagine it with some sparkle-ly Christmas tree tinsel coming out of the bowl too. Maybe I can find that at a garage sale before it's time to display?
The heavy cut glass bowl adds sparkle to the display of vintage ornaments. Is it Christmas yet?
This neighbor also gave me these two (2) sets of four (4) cappuccino cups and saucers.
The box shows them as black but they are all white.

I plan on finding a chandelier and using these to make it look something like this...

Which brings me to this beauty!
This teapot is so adorable but didn't sell in my garage sale, so my neighbor gave it to me. Remember this lamp that I just made using garage sale items a few weeks ago?
Today I found a perfect size and NEW lampshade for $1 to make another one out of this newly acquired teapot. The lampshade has a golden shimmer weave that compliments the gold edge on the teapot as well as the yellow roses.

Yep, another project, but this will be for sale when I get it done since I already have one. More cleansing right? Not bad for a rainy cold day! Thanks for dropping by.

One, Two, Bar Stools!

I recently showed you a couple of bar stools in my Week 6 - Diamonds In The Rough! post that you can see HERE.

I purchased them at a garage sale for my daughter's apartment. They cleaned up good but they needed to be jazzed up. The apartment has white cabinets so I left the base of the stools white.

Before
However, I did sand down the tops, painted them black, distressed just a tiny bit, then I still didn't think they were fun enough, so I stenciled on numbers in a creamy white on the tops.

I wiped a stain over them, sealed them and now they are ready for her to take to her apartment and put in place.

Dresser to TV Stand~ Revamp!

I recently showed you an orange and black, low setting dresser in my Week 6 - Diamonds In The Rough! post that you can see HERE. It's one that when I first saw it, I scratched my head and thought, "What were they thinking painting it like this?"!  I purchased it anyway at a garage sale for my daughter's apartment. Even though it was an ugly piece of furniture, I knew that I could transform it for my daughter to use for her TV/DVD in her new apartment. And, it has a much needed storage space to boot and very sturdy! Plus, at the price of only $5 for a solid oak dresser, it was a steal!
Before
I started the transformation by calling my daughter and asked, "Book page or sheet music? She replied back, "Book page, but why?" I told her I had a surprise for her and to come over in a couple of days.

I first cleaned and sanded down the whole piece. I knew I wanted to retain the black and it was painted well, but I wanted to distress it a bit and add a stain over the whole piece. I then painted the drawers a beige color. I was going to decoupage the face of the drawers with book pages, but wanted the edges beige for when opening. I definitely didn't want to see any orange.  I then added the book pages. I wiped a stain over the whole piece and then sealed it. I sprayed painted the original knobs black and when my daughter came over, she fell in love with it.

I wanted to put these brushed nickel pulls on the drawers...
But my daughter didn't want them and asked to use the original pulls. I think it would have really changed the look with these other pulls but alas, it's not mine!
This must be one of the easiest transformations that I have done and so fun. Don't you just love it too?
