I remember when I was 8 years old, and the fourth girl that my mom had in four years (that's one girl a year for 4 years straight with three in diapers!), when my mother announced that us girls had to make all our own clothes or go naked! Plus, we didn't wear jeans yet.
She meant it! Back then, we did not buy any of our clothes so going naked would have been our only option.
I didn't think at the time that it was a blessing. However, over the years (47 years that I have been sewing) it has really been a blessing.
Now, I buy all my clothes, alter them and hubby's because we are short, but I make all of my curtains and pillows...even if I don't need anything new. I just like doing it.
That brings us to my point of this post. My new valances.
Let's go back just a bit. After painting my kitchen/dining room red, I made these curtains.
I didn't have a pattern and just made them up as I went along. These have been very popular and I have been asked many times if I would make them for someone else. These now are for sale. They need to be used with a rod and rings with clips and were made for a window that is 45" wide, so if you have a window close to that size and love these red floral ones, then they are for you. Fully lined for $35 plus shipping. Contact me through email at tmtm4@comcast.net
Using the same material (above) but switching up the design a bit, I later made coordinating valances for the bay window. These are also for sale. They need to be used with a regular curtain rod and were made for a window that is 27" wide, so if you have a window close to that size and love these red floral ones, then they are for you. Fully lined for $45 plus shipping. I have four of these, you can buy one or all four. Each valance is 50" wide by 17" long with a 1" rod pocket. Contact me through email at tmtm4@comcast.net
I then saw this bird toile fabric (above) in the Ballard Designs catalog and fell in love. I purchased the fabric and made this valance recently.
I also made matching valances in the lovely toile fabric for the bay window. These are also for sale now. They need to be used with a rod and rings with clips. The kitchen window valance was made for a window that is 45" wide, so if you have a window close to that size and love these red toile ones, then they are for you. Fully lined for $45 plus shipping. Contact me through email at tmtm4@comcast.net
The red toile valances made for the bay window could also work for a sliding door. This valance is one continuous piece that is 134" wide by 13" long. But remember they need to have some draping allowance. My bay windows are 112" that these fit on. Fully lined for $95 plus shipping. Contact me though email above.
That brings me up to today. I just painted my kitchen gray and I love the change. I was hoping that I could keep the red valances and rugs to play off the gray but it just wasn't working for me.
It just wasn't what I had in mind. This is for sale if anyone likes it though. Fully lined $30 plus shipping. It does have a seam in the center as you can see in the above picture. The fabric is called Monogram - pewter. It's gray with black and white check accent fabric
So for my second try at it and using the same fabric, I think I have a winner with these pinched pleated ones. I like these...for now!
A girl and her sewing machine can be a dangerous thing!
Just email me if you are interested in purchasing any of the valances shown.
Plus, don't forget that I have a Valentine's Giveaway going right now...

ReplyDeleteCheers, Gee
Wow. Your mom really did you a favor. You are a amazing. I like all the red curtains! So pretty! Your new curtains are great too! Love the checkers!
ReplyDeleteKaren
I guess it was a blessing that your mom encouraged you to sew early on. These curtains you made are so pretty! Well done!
ReplyDeleteI love them all, I even posted your photo of the gray ones on my blog (with a link back to your blog of course). I am going to be a copycat and use your design with a different fabric...love, love, love that design. Have a great weekend Terry.

They all are beautiful...I also have a collection of valances that I keep changing - the best part is that they don't take a lot of fabric! Your final ones are just perfect and the rooms came together so perfectly with the grey and all your accent pieces - so soothing! Wish I had a room for the first valances!!
ReplyDeleteI also sewed my own clothes and loved it because no one had the same outfits as I ! And the skill stayed with me forever!
I like you new valance really looks so good in the room. Someone is getting a deal on your old valances, such pretty fabric. I love to sew too and make all my own curtains. Love how you can pick the material you want!
ReplyDeletewow...you definitley have a beautiful touch!! I love all of them!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty and what a pro you are at sewing! I really do like how you redid your kitchen, going to a gray paint makes it look like a different kitchen!
ReplyDeleteYour valances are so beautiful. Wish I was more skilled with my sewing machine! Thanks for sharing this at Silver Pennies Sundays x
ReplyDeleteWow, they are all gorgous! I even love the "failure". You have a great eye for design and spectacular sewing skills :)
