My little piece of nature!

Have you ever noticed all the ANTLERS in room decor these days? There is a wonderful website with a wealth of beautiful homes called, houzz.com, and you can search photos with anything you are looking for. Since I have seen tons of antlers in room decorating, I decided to do a search and see the UNexpected and expected. See if you can find the antlers.

I think you get the idea with just these few photos from Houzz.com.

Now here is something you don't know about me...

I am accustomed to antlers and have grown to like them in small amounts. In my past life, (with 1st hubby) we had a real working farm/ranch and he is an avid hunter. We had deer heads all over the walls in the great room. Now my grown son is an avid hunter, so it's in the blood with him.

In my present life, not so much. However, I still am drawn to the earthiness of something natural in my home, even if in not quite a natural state.

My point is (no pun intended), and at a complete shock to hubby #2, I purchased a nice 8 point rack on a recent outing.

Then I started the process of covering the skull with a nice soft leather scrap, a discontinued sample from a furniture store. After too many frustrating hours and some creative leather braiding,
I got to my end result!
When hubby came home from work, I proudly showed him our new "piece of nature" in our living room.
Needless to say, he wasn't too pleased (He's an accountant) since he said that he had thought I was buying the antlers for my son. Now, I ask you, why would I buy antlers for someone that has so many from all the years of deer hunting?

Sweet hubby bit his tongue and so far, is allowing them to stay right where I think they are perfect!
However, I also noticed that since hanging the antlers and putting the mounting board on the diagonal, you will notice on the connecting wall art, there are also the old framed tin ceiling piece and the two sconces that I made on the diagonal! Hmmm!

NOTE: It has been a couple of days since the antlers were hung and gladly hubby is saying that they are growing on him and likes them after all! I knew he would come around.

  1. Growing up a hunter's daughter I have noticed the trend too :). My hubby and I got a deer while we were engaged. We enjoyed the meat during our poor first year of marriage but now I wish we had saved then antlers too.

  2. I am inviting you to come and be part of my blog hop:

  3. Wow, that looks terriffic! I would love for you to share this (and any other rooms in your house) at my May House Par-tay at www.cheapcraftymama.com!

  4. I loved your pictures of the "expected" verus the "unexpected". I do love how you finished your antlers and mounted it. Give a very nice finished look to it,and a touch of elegance. So glad your hubs is liking it, the "man" in him is coming out! I don't have any yet, don't think they'd fit in with cottage? Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration over at Sunday's Best!

  5. Beautiful post! Your project turned out great! Blessings, Tammy

  6. We have a piece of antler that gets moved around from one table to the next. I don't know what to do with it. I'm a vegetarian and it bothers me to see it but it's hubby's so it stays. :)

  7. Hi, Terry! I loved your take on this...expected vs unexpected! That's so very true. I haven't picked up any antlers yet but they would definitely be the unexpected in my house! And I'm sure my husband would have the same first reaction as yours!

  8. These look great in that spot...and why is it that it takes husbands a few days to agree with us?

  9. I have an antler hand towel holder.

I got a visual of "antlers growing on him". If you husband says that again tell him you might put his head on the wall too! (I was gonna say mount him but that just sounded bad).

  10. They look great, I love the sign below them. It is funny how they are in fashion, ours are all at the camp now, might need to have them bring some home... I'm now a follower!

  11. My grandfather was a big hunter so I grew up around antlers. It is really amusing to someone of my generation to see them come back into fashion as a decor feature. Yours look great. I'm glad they have grown on your husband and he's agreeable to them staying.

  12. Terry they look great! I've been searching ebay for some of the roe antlers, but haven't bought any yet.

  13. Terry,
I actually like this look.I agree it has an earthy look too it.I am glad your husband is coming around.LOVE that chandy too.

  14. I like them used in a chandelier, like in your first photo.

  15. Who knew that antlers would become a cool decorating element?

  16. You are right! My most recent purchase of antlers were Williams-Sonoma candle sticks.

  17. How did you attach the skull cap to the plaque? Since you shrouded the cap with leather??

It makes me smile to hear from you!
