Let Love Grow Tutorial!

In my possession was this rusty old scrub/wash board.

In my possession (sort of, go with me here) is a grown daughter setting up her new white kitchen with turquoise/blue accents.

In my possession is my creative brain and my daughter's recent words to me, "Mom, I really like the saying, 'Let Love Grow'."
Plus her love of succulents...

So I put the two together and came up with this live wall art.

First, I painted a pint canning jar with turquoise paint. I sealed with wax after distressing it. I then took a piece of chalk and hand wrote "Let Love Grow" on the upper wood of the wash board. The reason is, if you don't like how you wrote the letters in chalk, it can be easily erased and start again.

I used black acrylic paint and painted over the chalk. I then distressed it and waxed the board.
I needed some way for this to hang, so on the upper back, I used two screw-in eyes and picture wire.
I was too lazy to go to the store and pick up a clamp to hold the jar, so instead, I drilled two holes all the way through and used more picture wire. I just slipped the jar under the wire after I wrapped the top with jute for looks sake and to help hide the wire, then tightened the back wire by twisting.
To add the soil and to not get the jar dirty, I used a piece of paper rolled into a funnel.
I knew that succulents would work best for this, I went out into my garden and pulled up a 'Hen & Chick" and some kind of tiny evergreen succulent that was given to me (sorry, I don't know the name of it).
I watered it in and it's ready to give to my daughter for her kitchen wall.

  3. Well looks like you've inspired two of at least to want to make one of these. Will be giving my wash board bit of paint to get it started, love how this looks. Will see if maybe hubs has a clamp to hang jar on wash board. Have lots of hens/chicks out in front yard and plenty of mason jars, good to go. Can hardly wait to get it started tomorrow, so glad you shared this.
    Happy weekend
